Agro-Processing Unit

The Agro-Processing sector is critical to Guyana’s development. It establishes a vital link between the Industry and Agricultural economy. This economy has enormous growth potential since emphasis is being placed on Agricultural Diversification which focuses on a wide range of commodities with the expectation of an increase in food production and a corresponding increase in the consumption of value-added food products.

With the change in lifestyles and food habits, there is an increasing demand for value added food products. The growth of the Agro-Processing industry brings immense benefits to the economy, enhancing productivity, creating employment and raising life-standards of the peoples across the country, especially those in rural areas.

The Guyana School of Agriculture provides training in value-added commodities to the Diploma in Agriculture and Certificate in Agriculture Programmes through the implementation of courses in Food Science and Agro Processing.

 

In addition, the department provides intense training to the students involved in Agro-Processing Programme who are expected to enter the Food Processing Industry. These students cover a wide range of Food Safety and Preservation Techniques during their courses in adding value to commodities.

The Agro-Processing Unit of the Guyana School of Agriculture is currently being managed by Ms. Grace Parris.
